The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like standard physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
