Each time a significant honors show draws close, one notices a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
