Matteo Cancellieri Shows Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in a long-running conflict with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the club had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Speculation that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to tell if they are improving or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Surprising Comeback

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He was on the last one with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his parent club were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived initially during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in that campaign, all but one of those from the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of his skill set. Originally described as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
